​Fr. Stabenau was a priest of the Diocese of Buffalo, New York. At the time of his death, he was the pastor of St. Hyacinth Church in Lackawanna, New York. He had been founding pastor of St. Hedwig Church in Dunkirk. He was fatally injured at the age of 43 when his automobile was struck by a trolley on Lake Shore Road near Lackawanna.
